Editing

Why would you want structural editing?

You’ve drafted a manuscript, you’ve revised it to try to make it work, but you’re still not quite sure if the story is working.

Structural editing is also known as developmental editing, substantive editing, or content editing.

I offer the following story-level editorial services for women authors of romance, women’s fiction, young adult fiction (contemporary and fantasy), and inspirational non-fiction.

Editorial Services

First Three Chapters Critique

An affordable option that helps you start your book off well.

  • This service gives you an in-depth structural edit of your first three chapters.

  • It gives an assessment of your hook, pacing, character set up, plot set up, and voice.

  • It highlights (but does not fix) areas of grammar, spelling, and punctuation that need attention.

What you’ll get:

  • An editorial letter (5 pages) with notes on what’s working or not working and suggestions for how to improve the manuscript.

  • In-manuscript edits and comments that ask questions, point out problems, and celebrate the amazing parts.

First Three Chapter Critiques start at $200 CAD for up to 20 manuscript pages*.

*A manuscript page is approx. 250 words and is based on standard manuscript formatting in Microsoft Word (double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12pt standard font such as Times New Roman).

Manuscript Evaluation

A thoughtful assessment of the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses.

  • This service gives you a brief assessment of the elements of story like theme, plot, characters, dialogue, pacing, tension, and setting.

  • It gives an assessment of the overall manuscript, its fit into the chosen genre, and its marketability.

What you’ll get:

  • An editorial letter (up to 20 pages) with notes on what’s working, what’s not working, and suggestions for how to make the book even better.

  • This does not include changes to the manuscript or corrections to spelling and grammar.

Manuscript Evaluations start at $800 for up to 70,000 words.

Structural Edit (Developmental Edit)

More intensive than the manuscript evaluation, a structural edit is a full story-level edit of your manuscript. It digs into the craft of writing and storytelling to tell a story in the best way possible.

  • This service is an in-depth assessment of elements of story like theme, plot, characters, dialogue, pacing, tension, and setting.

  • This involves suggestions on how to clarify or reorganize a manuscript for content and structure, and identifies leaps in logic.

What you’ll get:

  • An editorial letter (up to 20 pages) with notes on what’s working, what’s not working, and suggestions for how to improve the manuscript.

  • In-manuscript edits and comments that ask questions, point out problems, suggest solutions, and celebrate the amazing parts.

  • This does not include corrections to spelling and grammar.

Structural Edits start at $0.035 CAD per word.

Editorial rates are based on factors such as word count, manuscript complexity, and scheduling timelines and can change at any time. These rates are in line with the Editorial Freelancers Association’s member rates survey.
